3 Healthy Winter Drinks

IMG_0531.jpg

Ciao beautiful peoples! Welcome to a recipe blog post where I will be sharing three cozy winter beverages. We are currently in the thick of the holiday season and there are many occasions to enjoy a warm seasonal drink though they are often filled with sugar and other processed nonsense. The drink recipes that I have included here however, are healthier takes on some of the classics. I love finding healthier alternatives to traditional recipes, so much so that I wrote an e-cookbook dedicated to just that :) The e-book will be launching next month just in time for Christmas and Hanukkah and it makes for the perfect stocking stuffer. If you would like to be notified when the book is released simply click the link on the e-cookbook tab at the top of the page and write in your email address.

Let me know in the comments below if you make any of them or tag me on Instagram (@alexandratempletonfit).

Happy holidays :)

Cinnamon Hot Cocoa

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup milk (almond, cow, soy)

  • 1 T raw cacao powder

  • 1 T pure maple syrup, honey, or agave nectar

  • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract

  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon

  • pinch of sea salt

Directions:

  1. In a deep saucepan bring the milk to a low boil. Stir in the cacao powder, maple syrup/honey, vanilla extract and salt.

  2. Pour into your favorite mug and enjoy!

Hot cocoa is a holiday staple and the addition of cinnamon makes this one a bit warmer than the traditional version. This recipe uses raw cacao and natural sweeteners meaning it has more antioxidants and less sugar than the instant mixes sold in stores.

Apple cinnamon spiced tea [1]

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups water

  • 1/2 sweet apple, finely chopped and peeled

  • 1 small cinnamon stick (1 inch) or 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

  • 1/2 inch nub raw ginger

  • 1 T lemon juice

  • 2 black tea bags

  • Honey or sugar to taste

Directions:

  1. Bring water to a boil in a deep saucepan and add in all the ingredients except the apples and sugar/ honey. Allow to boil 4-6 minutes.

  2. Remove the saucepan from the heat and add in the apples. Cover with a lid and leave to steep another 5 minutes.

  3. Strain the tea then stir in sweetener of choice. *enjoy the apples separately as they’re very soft and tasty*

Fall is the season for mulled wine and cider and this apple cinnamon infused tea is a wonderful alcohol free version. Between the cinnamon, ginger and apple stewing your house is bound to smell like a yankee candle ;) Also, the addition of black tea makes this one a bit of a pick me up. Enjoy!

Ginger, mint, honey tea

Ingredients:

  • 1 nub raw ginger sliced (about half a thumb size)

  • 4-6 fresh mint leaves

  • Honey to taste

  • 1 cup water

Directions:

Boil water and store in ginger and honey. Allow to steep for 3-4 minutes and then add the fresh mint leaves and leave for another 2 minutes.

With all of the decadent holiday dishes this time of year sometimes it’s nice to enjoy something a bit simpler and easy on the yummy. This is my go-to drink in the winter because it’s refreshing (from the mint) and warm from the raw ginger. It’s also anti-inflammatory so it makes for the perfect after dinner drink when you happen to eat a bit too much.

What are some of your favorite holiday drinks? Any holiday recipes that you’d like to see here in a healthier version? Please leave any requests or comments down below or send me a message on instagram and I’ll get right on it.

Thank you all for reading and wishing you very happy holidays :)

Xoxo,

Alexandra
